Weevils

(Euophryum confine)

There are two common wood-boring weevils in the British Isles - Euophryum confine and Pentarthrum huttoni. These only attack wood when it is partly decayed - but will continue to attack if the decay is halted by drying out.

Both adults and larvae bore into the wood. Adults are likely to be present during the most of the year and can be clearly distinguished by their long snout.

Both types of weevil have a short life cycle of 7-9 months. Eggs are laid singly, with each female laying about 25.
