Cuprinol

Usage guide

Cuprinol Garden Shades gives beautiful long-lasting colour and weatherproof protection to all garden wood (including garden furniture and decking). The attractive colours and opaque matt finish have been specially formulated to complement the natural colours in the garden and allow the texture of the woodgrain to show through.

Cuprinol Garden Shades may be applied by brush, or for extra convenience (particularly on larger areas) sprayed on. For accurate, even spraying use only with the Cuprinol Fence Sprayer or Cuprinol Power Sprayer.

Where to use

Cuprinol Garden Shades is formulated for exterior use on any rough sawn or planed wood such as sheds, fences, gates, planters, pergolas, trellis, softwood garden furniture and decking. It may be applied to wood that has been previously pressure treated or treated with other wood finishes (providing they have been allowed to weather). If using on decking, more regular re-treatment may be necessary.

How much is needed

A 5L tin is normally sufficient for:
Brush: Smooth planed wood: 40m²
Brush: Rough sawn wood: 10-14m²
Spray: Smooth planed wood: 30-40m²
Spray: Rough sawn wood: 20m²
Coverage quoted with 2 coats however a third coat may be necessary to achieve a uniform colour and to give added protection to horizontal surfaces. Coverage may be less on weathered or absorbant wood.

Preparing the surface

Bare wood should be pre-treated with Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear (IP) before applying Cuprinol Garden Shades. Use pre-treated timber if in ground contact.

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from algae and mould.

Bare planed new wood: Sand smooth and wipe clean with white spirit to remove any natural oils/resins. Allow to dry.
Weathered planed wood: Completely remove all grey weathered wood by sanding back to a clean, bright surface, then follow preparation instructions for bare planed new wood.
Previously coated planed wood: Remove all surface coating and any grey weathered timber by sanding. Then treat as bare planed new wood.
Rough sawn wood: Clean weathered and dirty wood using a stiff brush, detergent and water.

How to apply

Try a test area first to ensure that colour and adhesion are acceptable. Colour testers are available to assist in your colour choice. Please note that the colour in the tin may be different to the final shade when dry.

Brush: Stir thoroughly before and during use. Brush on evenly along the grain.

Spray: Shake pack thoroughly before pouring contents into the Cuprinol Fence Sprayer or Cuprinol Power Sprayer. Refer to the Sprayer user guide for full instructions before every use. Cover any surfaces nearby in case of overspray. Any overspray should be cleaned up immediately (whilst still wet) with water and household detergent.

Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain is likely before product has dried.

Drying time

Cuprinol Garden Shades will be touch dry in 1 hour under normal weather conditions. Where a second coat is required, allow up to 8 hours in between coats. On areas subject to wear such as garden furniture allow a few days before heavy use or contact with soft furnishings.

Cleaning and storage
