Cuprinol

Usage guide

Cuprinol Decking Seal is a convenient way to protect garden decks against the harmful effects of the weather. It has a special wax enriched formula that repels water helping to keep decks drier and easier to clean. It also helps to prevent the wood cracking and splitting. Cuprinol Decking Seal is a clear treatment that allows the colour of wood to weather naturally.

Where to use

Cuprinol Decking Seal is suitable for use on all types of timber decking including boards and tiles. Regular application will ensure continued protection. Cuprinol Decking Seal is not intended to be overcoated with other decking or decorative finishes.

How much is needed

A 5 litre tub is normally sufficient for:
Smooth planed wood: 40m² with 2 coats
Rough sawn wood: 20m² with 2 coats
Note that absorbent or sawn wood and grooved decking will reduce coverage.

Preparing the surface

Timber specifically sold for decking is normally pretreated with wood preserver to prevent decay. If using unpreserved timber, treat with Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear and allow to dry for 2-5 days before applying Cuprinol Decking Seal. Seek advice for specific treatment methods for timber used in ground contact. Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from surface coatings, algae and mould. For best results, brush to remove dust and debris, then clean surfaces with water and Cuprinol Decking Cleaner. Rinse well and allow to dry. Resinous or oily wood may affect performance. Wipe clean with white spirit to remove natural oils/resins.

How to apply

Stir well before use. Apply by brush. Do not allow puddles to form, especially in grooves. Where they do form they should be brushed out before they dry. If required, apply a second coat when the first has dried. Avoid splashing plants. Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain, dew or frost is likely before the product can fully dry. Note that Cuprinol Decking Seal may cause some temporary yellowing of light coloured timber. As with many surface treatments, newly treated areas may be more slippery. This is a temporary effect, but extra caution should be taken immediately after application.

Drying time

2-6 hours depending on drying conditions.

Cleaning and storage

After use, remove as much Decking Seal as possible from brushes before cleaning with water. Do not use or store in extremes of temperature and protect from frost.

Always read the pack instructions carefully before use.
