What's in season when

What's in season when?

A great way to get the most out of your kitchen garden is to plan your growing patch for the coming year. So here is a list of fruit and veg that you could be sowing or harvesting throughout the year.

January & February: If you had been prepared the year before it is in January and February that you would be harvesting parsnips, leeks, and sprouting broccoli. If you are just starting out then this is a good time of the year to plant raspberry canes ready for the summer. However, the harsh weather will not help most plants so you can sow onions, leeks, peppers, tomatoes and chillies inside as well.

March & April: Now that the weather has warmed up a bit you can move those onions outside as well as planting potatoes. You can also sow a lot of your 'greens' during March and April such as broad beans, peas, cabbages, and brussels sprouts. You can also sow radishes, carrots and spring onions. Sowing inside during March and April? Then cucumbers and courgettes are the way to go.

May & June: We should be starting to some some regular sunshine now during May and June and the temperature should be starting to push up. You should now be starting to see the benefit of growing your own fruit and veg as you will be able to harvest your carrots, potatoes, radishes, peas, and broad beans. You can also harden off and plant your cucumbers, courgettes and tomatoes outside now.

July & August: As we move in to the summer now you should continue to sow your carrots, lettuce and radishes. You should be able to enjoy the full benefit of having your own kitchen garden now as you will be able to harvest courgettes, chillies, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, and cucumbers.
