How to make a raised bed
If you want to create a separate space for your kitchen garden plants or even if you just want to create a subtle feature in your garden then a raised bed is a really simple way to do this. For the framework you will need some pre-treated wood to protect the wood from rot and decay through its constant contact with moist soil. Then be creative! Don't think that you can only make square or rectangular raised beds - you can use as many pieces of timber as you like to create your desired shape. To add some colour, treat with Cuprinol Ultimate Wood Protector if you prefer woody colours or be creative with Cuprinol Garden Shades.
- Lay out the boards to your desired shape and put a cane in the ground at each corner.
- Tie string between the canes and then remove the turf, making the slices about 5cm thick, turn them over and arrange over the bed.
- Put the boards in position and use galvanised metal brackets and screws to join the corners of the frame.
- Add some multi-purpose compost to the bed and tread it down, adding a little water if it seems dry.
- To provide some extra support to the structure of the bed, take pre-treated pegs or stakes and hammer them into the ground at intervals round the outside of the frame.
- Now just add your own veggies, herbs, or fruit plants and get growing.
